Nike’s anime era continues, and this time it’s teaming up with one of the biggest franchises out there: One Piece. Instead of a simple logo slap, designers have taken inspiration right from the source material…

For the uninitiated, Devil Fruits serve as the supernatural power-ups at the centre of One Piece’s universe. If you eat one, you’ll gain a unique power — but you’ll also never be able to swim again. For a show about pirates, the implications are pretty obvious.

Anyway, back to the shoes. Nike has built three new Air Max Plus colorways, based on three of the series’ most iconic fruits.

  • Gomu Gomu no Mi: Space Purple, Atomic Green, and Sport Red
  • Mera Mera no Mi: Brilliant Orange and Vibrant Yellow
  • Ope Ope no Mi: Very Berry and Jade

The fully retooled uppers are designed to mimic each fruit’s power, and the Nike-branded Jolly Roger on the tongue is a great finishing touch. The public response? Here are a few comments on Nice Kicks’ recent Instagram post, spotlighting the drop two weeks ago:

@only.1rey: “I neeed every f**kin pair right now‼️🚨🚨🚨”

@tushikutochi_dinko: “The potential was there…. I’ve seen custom one piece kicks 1000x better”

@veganomoly: “The designs are pretty good but the shoe they used them on is 🗑️🗑️🗑️”

@lushartistgroup: “These are gonna be impossible to get lmao”

Which brings us to…

Here’s where things get a little interesting. You can’t get all three the same way, as Nike has staggered the rollout by region and date. Here are some need-to-know facts (as seen in Sneaker News and Sora News 24):

  • Pop-up events kicked off on September 4 in Tokyo, with other major cities to follow soon
  • Mera Mera drops first at select retailers on September 12
  • Ope Ope follows on September 19
  • Gomu Gomu will be available with the rest of the drop on September 25
  • The full collection goes global on SNKRS on September 25
  • Each pair has a standard retail price of $180, with some regional listings up to $210

So depending on where you are in the world and what fruit you want, it may be best to wait for the SNKRS drop instead of chasing regional releases. Side note: don’t sleep on the dope One Piece apparel that’s going to be dropping alongside the shoes.
