We’ve recently witnessed a fascinating wave of Nike SB Dunk Lows embracing Parisian themes. It all started with the “City of Love” pack, celebrating the romance and Renaissance craftsmanship, followed by the “City of Style” Dunk Low featuring toile de Jouy-esque fabric on the upper. But with Paris set to host the 2024 Olympic Games, it’s undoubtedly a timely celebration. Now, this trend of honouring Parisian culture continues with the “City of Cinema” Nike SB Dunk Low, which pays tribute to the city’s illustrious history in film and theatre.
A Closer Look at the Nike SB Dunk Low “City of Cinema”
While Nike’s skateboarding division has yet to officially reveal the finer points of this design, detailed glimpses courtesy of SB Heads from Belgium (@sbheadsbe) offer an intriguing preview of an early sample pair.
The distinctive design captures the magic of Parisian cinema with a nostalgic, vintage-inspired aesthetic. The footwear is adorned with luxurious velvet, evoking memories of classic theatre interiors. The base, featuring “Celestial Gold” velvet, conjures images of elegant stage curtains, while the collar and tongue, in “Dark Team Red” velvet, mimic the plush seating found in old cinemas. Additionally, the heel tab sports “Armory Navy” velvet, reminiscent of the classic velvet ropes we’ve come to associate with old-school theatres. But there’s still more to discover in this intricate design.
Take the overlays, for example. They opt for cracked leather in gold, creating a vintage, worn-in look reminiscent of aged cinema walls.
The sides then showcase gradient Swoosh logos with yellow piping, and the Nike SB branding on the tongue and insole adopts a retro cinema-inspired font, adding to the overall thematic depth.
The design is rounded off with a “Celestial Gold” midsole and a translucent rubber outsole. However, one potentially divisive feature is the “Baroque Brown” brush stroke effect on the midsole. Whether it’s intended to mirror the varnished appearance of old Parisian theatre floors or simply Nike SB experimenting with an alternative hue remains a mystery, but we’re eager to see what the final release brings.
At this point, it’s probably important to note that the retail version might differ from this early sample. So, if you’re not a fan of this particular detail, remember there’s always the option of a sole swap or using acetone to solve the issue.
