The Nike Air Max 90 has been a staple in the sneaker community for over thirty years, earning its place as a timeless classic. Over the decades, we’ve seen countless colourways and collaborations, from the highly sought-after Kaws x Air Max 90 partnerships to iconic in-line releases like the Nike Air Max 90 Hyperfuse Independence Day, available in striking white, vibrant red, and bold blue colourways. Yet, a fresh update can do wonders even for a cherished icon like the Air Max 90. This brings us to the “Velcro Heel” edition, a subtle twist on a legendary silhouette.

A Closer Look at the Collection

If you’re curious about what sets the “Velcro Heel” edition apart (and I bet you’ve already guessed just from the name), it’s all about the removable Velcro patch on the heel. This seemingly simple little patch gives you the freedom to customise your look. This playful twist brings an element of versatility that refreshes the beloved classic.

So far, we’ve seen two eye-catching colourways make an appearance: the sleek “Photon Dust” and a stylish pair in varying shades of grey.

The “Photon Dust” edition flaunts a light grey leather and suede mix. Leather adorns the mudguard, while suede accents the quarter panels. Semi-translucent TPU touches on the Swoosh, eyestays, mudguard window, and outsole come in an off-white hue, adding to the shoe’s versatile aesthetic.

At first glance, it might look like a regular—though undeniably charming—colourway. However, the removable Velcro patch on the heel introduces an unexpected twist and a layer of personalisation, distinguishing it from other Air Max 90 variants.

Each patch, crafted from rubber to maintain the model’s traditional look, comes in monotone options of “Infrared”, “Volt”, and white. These velcro heel badges pay homage to some of the most iconic and beloved Nike Air Max 90 colourways, offering a nostalgic element for dedicated fans of the classic sneaker.

Nike Air Max 90 “Dark Grey”

But if you’re looking for something a bit darker, there’s another colour option that offers a sleek and sultry “Dark Grey” look. The mudguard is wrapped in nubuck, while the quarter panels boast rich suede. Meanwhile, the toe box, tongue, and collar are dressed in dark grey mesh, complemented by a lighter grey inner lining and Swooshes to pull the entire ensemble together.

But that’s not all—this pair has its own removable heel badge colours of black, light blue, and pink. You can mix and match to your heart’s content!

And the fun doesn’t stop there! Each of these beautiful colourways features mismatched insoles echoing their accompanying heel badge colours and extra pairs of laces for a coordinated look.

The laces allow you to customise your look further, adapting your shoe to fit your mood or outfit. You’d be amazed at how a quick change of these elements can transform the shoe’s overall aesthetic, making room for some truly eye-catching sneaker looks.
